Anyone Via a Search Engine!

A few week ago I was looking through the log files of one of my web sites and I discovered that a search engine had indexed some of my "secret" web pages and my digital downloads.

If someone were to enter the right search criteria they would find and be able to download my products without paying me a penny!

After the initial shock and visions of dollars slipping through my fingers, the analytical part of my brain regained control. I have been a professional programmer and an Internet entrepreneur for over 7 years; how could I make such a rookie mistake?

Setting up a web page to sell a digital product is relatively easy. There are hundreds of ebooks and video courses that show you step-by-step how to do it. They all follow pretty much the same procedure and result in a similar setup: you have a sales page, the order link goes to your payment processor, and after payment has been successfully been processed the customer is sent to your secret download page. Sounds familiar?

Since everybody is doing this, what could go wrong with this scenario? Enter search engines. The goal of a good search engine is to find and index every web page and file on the Internet. The search engine does not distinguish between your sales page (which you would like to be indexed) and your download page or your valuable PDF file (which you absolutely do not want to be found). Since search engines are competing against each other in trying to index as much content as possible, they are very aggressive in ferreting out content. Exactly how effective they are at this was a surprise to me.

But maybe it's just me that's a moron and I'm unable to follow simple instructions in setting up my web sites. Nope. Within a few minutes of searching I was able to find links to thousands of dollars worth of software and ebooks. They were available just a click away, without paying a penny. And since search engines often cache content the owner of the product wouldn't even know they had been robbed.

Amazingly even big name Internet marketers and so called gurus had made the same mistakes. That made me feel a little bit better, but probably not them, so I will not embarrass them by naming any names. But you can be sure that they are busy reading this report and fixing their web sites right now.
